Potty Training an Adult Dog, Impossible?

One of the difficult tasks that people has to put up with is training. Training people is easier compared to animals. But among the many animals that man has ever trained, the dog is probably the easiest. Dogs learn quickly, especially puppies. What if you have an adult dog that still needs potty training? What should you do in order to train him effectively?

Whether you're training a puppy or an adult dog, your patience will be put to the test. You should work hard and let your dog feel that you love him. Training an adult dog to break his old habits can be tiresome, since he has been that way for a long time. But the secret to achieve your goal is to make it one of your top priorities.

Training an adult dog will require you to keep an eye at him at all times. And make sure that he does not urinate or defecate inside the house. You can use a leash to tie him at a designated area in the house, but don’t isolate him from the rest of the family members. Others suggest using a crate, but with adult dogs, it is not highly advisable. If you want to use a crate, you should first contact the right authorities because this will not be easy for your dog.

Dogs have their own pace when learning new things. Puppies are easier to potty train compared to adult dogs, but if you commit yourself fully and be consistent in all your actions, the potty training will be over soon. Dogs learn progressively, so don’t confuse your dogs with inconsistencies in your actions.

Here are helpful tips to potty train your adult dog:

- teach your dog to eliminate body wastes in one designated area- limit the water that you give your dog, just make sure that he does not get dehydrated- don’t let your dog out of sight- never use physical or abusive punishment- clean the place where he accidentally did his thing- establish a particular command when your dog has to eliminate waste- take your dog out of the house but don’t play with him unless he is finished- praise your dog for a job well-done- create a specific space in the house where your dog can join the whole family; it is not good to let him wander in the entire house- allow your adult dog to sniff the place where he should defecate and urinate- take turns during the night, you can let other members of the family help, because in the end, you will all benefit from it- after seven in the evening, don’t give your dog any food or water to prevent him from eliminating waste during the wee hours of the night

It's quite easy to tell if your adult dog needs to go. He will usually do circles, sniffs, whimpers, act distracted, can't relax, goes to and from the door, scratches the door, and wander away. Be attentive to these warning signs, and you will find it easy to train your dog.

Training an adult dog is difficult but if you have a lot of patience and love, you can pull it off very soon. Once your dog learns, he will stay that way all his life.
