It is relatively easy to train small dogs to potty compared to larger ones. However, the owners should be diligent enough in their potty training lessons to become successful. Give your dog only a small spot. This will help him in realizing that the small spot is the area you want him to utilize. Generally, the instinct of your dog will take him into the exact spot reacting in the smells of his urine spilled in the newspapers thinking it was the spot he previously utilized.
Avoid reprimanding your dog through physical punishment if ever he slips or accidents happen. It could just make the situation worse and deprive you of achieving your goal. Instead patiently take your small dog outside after eating, exercising, or waking. Remember that they usually eliminate body wastes after doing these activities. This will also provide you a good opportunity to watch them doing the right thing. By simply changing the tone of your voice makes him realize that you are disappointed by his behavior. Some owners are doing ridiculous ways in handling such behavior. You must never put the dogs face in his urine or potty in teaching him not to utilize that area again. This is not a hygienic way to handle such situation. Besides dogs have different time lapses before learning potty training. So, it is very important for you to stay persistent and patient even if it requires you to wake up even during the night for a couple of weeks in training him.
Remember that like humans, small dogs need to grow older so that they could gain control over what you taught them. The success of training small dogs is directly associated with your diligence. Smaller dogs should have allowable time before they could catch what you are teaching them. The most important part is helping your small dogs learn to potty in the proper place.
