Tip(s) in Training Your Dog for a Potty-Free House

At some level, all animals think alike. Their intellectual level is not the same as that of humans. You can't expect them to behave as people do. And this is true even with dogs. You've seen a lot of dogs obey their owner's commands and behave well in the company of people. But this is done because of the sole efforts of their owners to train them.

Training is a difficult task, especially if you don’t have the right qualities that go along with it. If your temper constantly explodes, then you'd rather not train your dog because this will only be detrimental to the task.

You want your home to be clean and free from any odor. But with a dog companion inside the house, your home will be turned into a stinky and dirty old house. Dogs will 'go' if they have to. They don’t think and they don’t tell you when it is time. By nature, they are just like that. The ultimate task that you should overcome is to establish a sort of communication with your dog, a level with which he can understand.

Potty training your pet dog requires four elements which includes confinement, training, timing, and praise. If one of these elements is missing, then you will not be able to potty train your dog effectively.

The first key element is confinement. If you have a puppy, you can use a crate that is just large enough for them to lie down or turn around. Dogs don’t want to pee or poo where they usually sleep; so make sure that the size of the crate fits your dog. You can also designate a particular place in your homes and tie your dog if you don’t want to use a crate.

Training is effectively done if you have a leash. This way, your dog will not leave your sight, and no matter what you do, you can still keep a close eye at him. Since dogs are playful, they are easily distracted by other things which catch their attention. With a light tug on the leash, he will again pay attention to what you're teaching him to do.

Use the leash every time you go out of the house. Bring him to the place where he should eliminate his waste. To establish a sort of understanding, use specific commands like 'go poop' or 'go potty'. If he is already familiar with the command, he can do it alone without the leash.

Once your dog obeys your command, don’t forget to praise him. People like it when they are praised, dogs are like that too. They want attention, and they do love treats.

Proper timing is another key element. If your dog urinates or defecates appropriately outside, then you should give him his free time without a leash or out of the crate. But make sure that you still supervise him.

You should always anticipate for your dog's needs. Pay attention to some signs which otherwise indicates that he has to eliminate.

Accidents do happen, but you have to catch your dog while doing his 'thing' for you to correct the wrong thing he has done. You have to be consistent in everything you do.

You and your dog will benefit greatly from potty training; and you're home will be remain clean and in order.
