Don’t be deceived by certain myths that many people are used to believing. Oftentimes, people can't achieve their goals because they believe in things which don’t have a clear scientific explanation. Dogs are like human beings. Every day is a chance to learn another new thing. Even if you have an older dog, you can let him undergo potty training, and you'll be surprised that though he's quite advanced in age, he can still learn.
Getting rid of old habits is difficult, and this is true with both humans and their pet dogs. You can just imagine what they have to go through; this experience is not new to you. You can compare the situation to a person who is used to drinking and smoking. To quit drinking and smoking is very difficult for that person. For a dog's point of view, it's quite hard to unlearn what he has been doing for years now, like taking his time to pee or poo.
If you want to be successful in potty training your dog, you need to focus in guidance and you should have a long string for patience.
One of the things that you should consider is the physical limitation of your dog. This would depend greatly on his age. Older dogs are less active but it doesn’t mean that they can't be trained.
Older dogs lose interest in doing a particular task rapidly and he gets tired easily as well. So you should make your training sessions as short as possible; and do more repetitions all throughout the day. Having a long training session can get your dog exhausted; therefore, he can't keep up with what you're actually teaching him.
Rewarding your dog with a treat for a good behavior is one way to encourage him to remain behaved. But with older dogs, you must limit the treats because they easily gain weight compared to younger dogs. Older dogs are prone to certain diseases, and you don’t want your dog to get sick during your training period.
Controlling their bladder is difficult for older dogs; so you should always keep this in mind. You can expect a smooth potty training session with your dog if you take him out of the house more often. Of course, this would require a lot of your time and attention. But with fewer accidents inside the house, the better and faster it is to train your dog.
You must be consistent to allow familiarization. Once your old dog is familiar with what he is supposed to do every time you give a command, then he'd be more than glad to obey you.
Potty training can't be done overnight. It would take some time especially if you have an older dog. Spend extra time with him, take note when your dog has to pee or poo; you can even jot down some important information so you won't be able to forget.
If you still encounter accidents, don’t scold your dog; this will only cause confusion. Older dogs are like humans; once they grow old, they act like little children. They need more attention. Scolding your old dog very often can cause misbehavior which is another big problem.
Observe patience until your old dog has finally adapted to his new habit. Let your dog feel that you care for him; this is what he needs the most.
