It is a fact that an untrained dog will need to "relieve" themselves whenever and wherever they need to. This is why it is important for you to potty train your dogs while they are still young. By doing this, they will be able to do their duty on an area that's ok with you.
However, some people make a mistake to punish their pet dogs whenever their pets make a mistake of relieving themselves on an undesired location, such as your couch, you carpet, and in areas where you don’t want them to do it. By punishing your dog, the dogs will be more diligent in hiding the act from you. This will result in taking you much further to the goal you intend to achieve in potty training your dog.
When potty training your dog, it is recommended that you train them by using a leash. With a leash, you can keep the dog close to you and you will be able to supervise everything they do. With a leash, you will be able to take your dog and potty train them to the desirable area where it is alright for them to potty. After meals, take your pet dog to the area by using a leash and wait for them to do their duty. Once they did, you have to praise them.
Link the leash with the word outside. Every time you take your dog out to defecate or to urinate, use the word outside. You will have to use the word outside often in order for your dog to understand it and link it with the leash and go out to do their duty. In time, you will see that the leash will no longer be required when they need to go. All you have to do is ask if they need to go outside. If your pet responds with a bark, then let him out. You will see that they will be able to do it on their own at a desirable area where they have been trained to do it.
When you catch your puppy in the act of doing it inside your home or in other undesirable locations, you have to correct it and teach. It is important that you catch them in the act of defecating or urinating in the house and shove their nose in "it". If you do this when they are already doing another activity, such as chewing their bone, they will think that their nose is being shoved into their own mess because of chewing their bone. This is why it is important that you do this only if you catch them doing it. After punishing them, tell them to go outside in a firm voice. Open the door and point out, if they potty outside the house, praise them.
Another mistake that dog owners do when they are trying to potty train their dogs is by letting the dog outside do potty or poop, letting them back in again and giving them treats. Always remember that it is important for you to accompany the dog outside and praise them while they are successfully doing their duty outside your house or at the area where you taught them. If you give your puppy treats or praise them after pooping or peeing outside, they will think that they are being rewarded for coming back inside the house again.
If you make this mistake, you will see that your dog will sometimes just run around outside your house and come back again expecting you to give them a treat or praise. Because of this mistake, they will end up mistaking proper potty training from other activities.
Potty training can take two to three months. However, it will still depend on how persistent and consistent you are with the training, the more you train, the less time it will take for your dog to understand the training.
